Attorney, Jeffrey L. Thomason
Jeff Thomason is a criminal defense attorney representing clients throughout eastern Idaho. He handles a wide range of cases, from traffic violations to DUI, misdemeanor and felony drug offenses, domestic violence, theft, violent crimes, sex offenses, probation violations, and grand jury investigations and proceedings.
EXPERIENCE
Before entering private practice, Jeff spent nearly twelve years as a prosecutor. He served for ten years as City Prosecuting Attorney for the City of Idaho Falls, including several years as the city’s sole criminal prosecutor. He later joined the Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, where he served as Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney.
During his time as a prosecutor, Jeff handled thousands of criminal and traffic cases. He gained extensive courtroom experience evaluating evidence, making charging decisions, negotiating resolutions, arguing motions, and trying cases involving DUI, domestic violence, drug offenses, theft, assault, traffic violations, and other misdemeanor and felony matters.
This background now shapes Jeff’s approach to criminal defense. He understands how prosecutors assess cases, what factors influence charging and plea decisions, and where weaknesses may exist in the State’s evidence. His years in the local criminal justice system have also helped him build credibility and strong professional relationships with prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and attorneys throughout the region. That experience and credibility allow him to communicate effectively, negotiate candidly, and pursue resolutions that reflect both the evidence and each client’s circumstances.
Clients often describe Jeff as personable, approachable, and straightforward. He takes time to understand each situation, explain how the process works, and outline the realistic options available. He provides candid advice, prepares thoroughly, and works to achieve the best result the facts and the law will support.
EDUCATION
Jeff earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Brigham Young University–Idaho and his Juris Doctor from the University of Idaho College of Law. Before beginning his legal career, he completed internships with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Bonneville County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
